Rye bread has long been the staple of Estonian’s diets, and one of our favorite restaurants in Tallinn has aptly adopted the name.

Leib Resto ja Aed (Bread Restaurant and Garden) offers traditional Estonian cuisine with a modern twist.

In the winter or on cooler evenings the cozy restaurant offers a fantastic atmosphere in which to enjoy your meal, but when the sun comes out you will want to take your place out in the lovely garden, surrounded by the historic walls of the Old Town. If it isn’t the best al fresco eating spot in Tallinn, then it is certainly in the top few.

The menu isn’t extensive, but it changes regularly and each dish is fantastically designed.

The dishes feature local ingredients such as herring, buckwheat and goats cheese and of course some magnificent Estonian bread.

Our favorite option is the rye bread ice cream, which may sound odd at first, but everyone who tries it ends up loving it.

If you’re looking for a drink with your meal, Leib has an excellent selection of wines, and one of Tallinn’s better beer selections.
