Tour Outline

Patarei was built as a naval fortress by in 1840. However it’s most interesting period was between 1919 and 2004, when it was used as a prison. Learn about why the last execution took place here in 1991, even though capital punishment had been abolished. See a prison which operated up until 2004, even though it looks like something from the 19th century.  Come and discover all about life in a soviet prison, and you will leave here extremely thankful that you visited for hours, rather than years. There are plans afoot to convert this structure into something more modern, perhaps a hotel or apartments. So come and take in one of the worlds most amazing and authentic prison museums while you still have the chance. Patarei Prison is one of the most interesting and under appreciated tourist sights in Tallinn. Make sure you don’t miss it.
