Cruise Passengers Guide
Make the most of your single day in Tallinn

In order to help you make the most of your time in Tallinn during your cruise, we have put together some tips and ideas gained from our years of experience running shore excursions.

The harbour is very centrally located in Tallinn.
The harbour in Tallinn is smack bang in the middle of town, so there is no need to worry about getting into the Old Town. It is a comfortable 10 minute walk to the edge of the Old Town, and if you get tired or have trouble walking taxis or the cruise shuttle are not overly expensive. Take a look at the map to the right where we have marked the harbour and the Old Town.

The Euro is the currency in Estonia.
Some websites and books still have the Estonian currency listed as the Crown or Kroon. Estonia adopted the Euro on January 1st 2011, and the Kroon is now nothing more than an historical curiosity. Try to avoid using dollars as well, as you’ll pay a lot more for things if you do.

Watch the Singing Revolution before you leave home.
It’s a fantastic documentary in its own right, and will and a lot to your understanding of recent Estonian history for your visit. We have found that people who have watched the film tend to get a lot more out of many places we take them, and enjoy their Tallinn visit more. It’s fairly widely available, and many people have got a hold of it through Netflix.

Read an Estonian book.
There are a handful of Estonian books in English, and any of them will help you get a better understanding of Estonian culture. There are also some great books set in Estonian by foreign authours. We recommend anything by Jaan Kross (Treading Air or The Tsars Madman are perhaps his best known) Purge by Sofi Oksanen (She’s actually Finnish, but the book is set in Estonia), Memories Denied by Imbi Paju or The Christening by Denise Neuhaus.
